MicHael
Michael writes letters and mails them with stamps. He doesn't own a computer, cell phone or TV. Michael bought the bookstore from Max and hopes to create a place where people can escape the impersonal nature of technology and the growing mean-spiritedness he finds in modern life. He believes owning the bookstore will help him win Claire back.
Claire
Claire, Michael's ex-fiance, has returned from Buenos Aires where she lived with an octogenarian musical conductor — "A national treasure of Argentina for Christ's sake." Now she's dating a local, university president. When she needs emotional support, she tornados into Michael's world.
Ingrid
Ten years ago, Ingrid moved from Poland to the United States. Her direct nature can create socially awkward situations. She is a high school English teacher and detests Claire.
Roberto
Micheal's best friend, Roberto, wants to be a curious person and a deep thinker, but in spite of all of his efforts he is uninterested in everything. Women, on the other hand, find Roberto fascinating and will do anything to end up in his bed.
Max
Max sold the bookstore to Michael. His dream was to see the millennial bring the store into the future — Facebook, Twitter, Virtual Reality promotions — but is dismayed as he watches Michael strip the store of Wi-Fi and any technology developed after 1914.
Lenka is a graduate student, barista and crossing guard. The bookstore is her second home. She's in love with Michael.
Syd has a Ph.D. in history with an emphasis in anarchy. He sells pot for a living.
